FREE & EQUAL? 2023

Gender, Power & Masculinity

National Schools' Conference for ALL Genders

FRIDAY 13TH OCTOBER 2023: 9.30am – 3.30pm

This IN-PERSON conference will be streamed LIVE to secondary schools & sixth forms across the UK.

Join students & schools across the country to explore GENDER, POWER & MASCULINTY.

Following last year’s hugely successful conference on S**ism, Misogyny and Harassment, this year’s FREE & EQUAL? conference will explore the factors which underpin these inequalities.

Students will be equipped to NAVIGATE the messages from online influencers, culture and upbringing; RE-THINK assumptions about gender and race and QUESTION the use & misuse of POWER. We will explore how ideas about masculinity have shaped and continue to shape our relationships and society for better or worse.

Now is an unprecedented time to address these issues in our schools and equip our students to challenge injustice and champion the human rights of all.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Each session is 10-15 minutes long followed by short discussion and Q&A.
Ideal for re-use in tutorials and assemblies.
Students can post questions remotely and in person.
LIVE feedback and voting throughout the day.

Suitable for years 7-13 but aimed at KS4 and KS5.

What teachers and students said last year…

“Absolutely life-changing”
“I’m just buzzing – so inspired to change things.”
“I want my whole school to hear this – this should be mandatory.”
“My students are so excited – they’re already making plans to run their own conference in school.”
“It’s amazing to be around other young people who want to see change happen.”

 SHIFT THE CONVERSATION!
Suitable for Secondary & Sixth Form, by being part of the conference  students will:
  • EXPLORE how social constructs about gender, masculinity and femininity shape our identities and impact society.
  • UNDERSTAND how a misunderstanding and misuse of power can lead to controlling relationships and shattered lives.
  • Be INSPIRED to challenge the stereotypes and prejudice which perpetuate injustice and abuse.
  • DISCOVER the individual and collective IMPACT we can make when we understand and stand up for the rights and value of every human being.
